Modern interpretations in new materials
The newest mirror to be launched by Diane Watts for Spring 2010 was inspired by a board game played two thousand years ago. Diane was recently on a business trip to Italy and with an hour of spare time, visited a small local museum where she saw the remnants of an ancient game board.
“No-one remembered how the game was played, but there were three variations of the board, each with a very unusual design. I immediately thought the patterns would translate beautifully to mirrors and suit any modern space if we made them in very up-to-date materials,” Diane says.
“The original game featured nine spaces so we are simply calling the mirror Roman IX in honour of its origin. Until very recently it was impossible to cut an inside square in glass, but by using new methods we've been able to achieve the impossible and create a unique look."
Then we will expand the line this Summer with two variations:
• one based on a simplified version of the board game which used only five squares, naturally to be called Roman V and suitable for smaller iterations;
• and a more complex version appropriate for larger sizes with 12 elements, to be called Roman XII.
Finishing touches in typical Diane Watts' style are a backing of black ultra suede and a deep surround of stainless steel.
